KICKSTAND COMEDY OFFERS A DISTINCT AND COMPREHENSIVE SIX-LEVEL IMPROV CURRICULUM  

We are committed to empowering our students to find their comedic voice and create magic on stage—through learning and practicing the skills necessary to play effectively, listen zealously, support thoroughly, and create honestly.

Kickstand strongly prefers all students start our program at Level 1. Prospective students who have FULLY COMPLETED an improv program at another professional improv theater may start at Level 2 with administrative approval. Level 1

Level 1 – Intro to Improvisation and the Kickstand Philosophy

Learn the power of agreement, honesty and spontaneity. Improve your communication and teamwork skills, developing your comedic voice, or both; this class equally honors both of these goals in an open and supportive environment. (Student cap: 12)

Level 2

Level 2 – Scene work Skills and Advanced Tactics

Focus on filling out your improv tool belt with tips to add focus and depth to your scene work. We’ll start to introduce basic long-form improv mechanics such as game, edits, tag-outs and walk-ons—while exploring the importance of creating rich environment, through physicality and object work. (Student cap: 12)

Prerequisite: Completion of Level 1 or administrative approval.

Level 3 – Sign Up

Level 3 – Making Connections and Creating a Cohesive Set

Work towards performing improv sets that feel like a complete, cohesive show, focus on developing the “groupmind” aspect of improv with your fellow classmates, and continue to heighten your scene work chops. (Student cap: 10)

Prerequisite: Completion of Level 2.

Level 4 – The Harold Intensive

You’ll learn the basic structure of The Harold—improv’s most universally revered structure. As a group, we’ll explore the skills needed to weave together varying themes, diverse characters, and a multitude of perspectives into one singular, connected piece of comedic theater. (Student cap: 10)

Level 5 - Advanced Formats

Challenge your developing improv skillset with an exploration of multiple traditional improv formats—including the Deconstruction, La Ronde, Close Quarters and more. You’ll learn how different formats influence the kind of scene work you do, as well as how remain playful and spontaneous while executing a specific structure. (Student cap: 10)

Prerequisite: Completion of Level 4.

Level 6 - Create Your Own Show

Taking everything you’ve learned in levels 1-5, this class will push students to collaborate to hone a group-comedic voice and develop their own improv structure that plays to the strengths and chemistry of the full ensemble. 

Prerequisite: Completion of Level xx.
